PRACTICE TEST 1

WONDERLAND

Untitled_Artwork.jpg
STATIC FORM

In this assignment I create five abstract images based on static shapes that together form a series. This series is characterized by the coherence between the use of form and the use of white, black and a spot color that you can mix yourself. The white may be regarded as a representative of light. Painting, drawing, collage or mixed forms in between are possible. The starting point is design. The dimensions in this series are each 20 x 20 cm.

The sketches on separate A3 sheets are documented together with my written explanation. Below is the elaboration of the assignment.

THE ESSENCE OF FORM

In the early stages of the test, I started brainstorming. What does the static form mean? And how can I enhance this effect by using color?  After writing down all the associations with the word, I started looking at the underlying connections between shape and color and how I could bring them together.

In the sketches I experiment with the layering and solidity of two-dimensional form and the use of color. In the first sketches I work a lot with contours and the overlapping of shape and color.

Finally, after a series of sketches and accompanying thoughts, I concluded that I wanted to incorporate five elements of form throughout the collection to create balance. Taking away the black and white 'background' and merging it with the foreground puts more emphasis on the essence of the two-dimensional shape and flat color.

The white background and the choice of cool, blue tones in combination with curved geometric shapes, including circles and ovals, should emphasize the static of the shapes and this idea is reinforced by the surrounding non-colours. The fact that the shapes merge into each other on the five different canvases shows coherence in the collection. Despite the static shapes, the difference in size and the presence of color give a lively whole.
